Spreading awareness about a life-changing opportunity for public servants

Thank you for taking the #MDTAPS pledge to tell a public servant about Public Service Loan Forgiveness!

Step 1

Decide who you are going to tell. Here is some guidance to help you build your list:

  • Qualifying employment is determined by the type of organization your contacts work for not their specific role within the organization. Qualifying public service employers include:

-Government agencies (federal, state, local, and tribal)

    -501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations

-Other tax-exempt organizations that provide qualifying public services

Note: The employees must work directly for the qualifying employer (s) for at least 30 hours on average per week. Direct employees receive a W-2 that reports their annual earnings. Multiple jobs for qualifying employers (worked at the same time) can be combined to reach the 30 hour threshold.

  • Since the waiver expired, the borrower must work in public service to gain credit for past payments. It might be worth applying anyway to determine how many months of history could count toward PSLF once employment has been verified. Some borrowers may want to return to work for a qualifying employer based on the results.

  • We drafted a message to make sharing as easy as possible. You can copy and paste the text from the #MDTAPS Sample Outreach Letter below.
